Just south of Melbourne, Palm Bay is Brevard County’s largest and most populated community. The city is located on the east central Florida coast midway between Jacksonville and Miami on the Indian River Lagoon and just an hour southeast of Orlando and the attractions. Bisected by Interstate 95, the City is served by two interchanges, Exits #173 and #176, and is planning for a third interchange in the southern portion of the city to service a growing community and south County.
Palm Bay is Florida’s 9th largest city geographically and the 22nd most populated where over 93,000 residents call “home.” Palm Bay is also home to one of Brevard’s largest employers-Harris Corporation, a Fortune 500 company. Harris’ history and presence has spun off and attracted other high technology companies to Palm Bay, adding to its strong employment base including: Intersil, DRS Optronics, DRS Tactical, MCAssembly, etc. Other businesses attracted by the growth are also moving to Palm Bay including Wal-Mart, Space Coast Harley Davidson, Starbucks and Comfort Suites.
But Palm Bay isn’t all work! Outdoor recreational enthusiasts also have many opportunities for fun, whether it’s at one of 20 city parks including the “Hurricane Paintball Park, fishing, boating, windsurfing, or swimming in the Indian River Lagoon or nearby ocean beaches, teeing off at three golf courses or, visiting the Turkey Creek Wildlife Sanctuary. The new “Lagoon House” is a visitors’ center and public information resource for the Indian River Lagoon Scenic Highway and estuary.
Palm Bay has 12 public schools from grades K-12, a new municipal charter school under construction and 10 private schools to choose from. Brevard Community College, Palm Bay campus, has a variety of associate degree programs plus, provides classroom space to University of Central Florida, Webster and Barry colleges for baccalaureate programs. Palm Bay Community Hospital, part of Health First Inc., has just announced plans to expand their surgical services department and the number of beds from 60 to 100.
Palm Bay is a three-time finalist in the “All-American City” competition, sponsored by the National League of Cities which recognizes cities that have made substantial gains in addressing critical local issues.
